Private developer plans small-scale data center project on Petersburg waterfront

Petersburg's utility directors did the math — and they like what they see.

KFSK reporter Olivia Rose covered Greensparc's proposed small-scale data center project on the Petersburg waterfront, including a detailed look at what it would mean for local ratepayers. The short version: Borough power department officials estimate the project would generate $1–2 million in annual revenue for the utility — enough to cut projected annual rate increases roughly in half, from 4% to 2%.

The proposed site is the former Ocean Beauty Seafoods property, owned by Petersburg native Andrew Mazzella. The existing 2-megawatt transformer on the property has been sitting idle since the cannery closed in 2016. Greensparc would put it to work.

Outgoing Utility Director Karl Hagerman put it plainly: "I've never had a customer walk through the door that was going to benefit all my other customers — never. And this one did."

The project is still in early stages. No contract has been signed, and the Borough isn't a party to the deal — this is a private arrangement between Greensparc and the property owner. But the power department's support is on record, and the community conversation has started.
